.:|PERFIL|:.

The road trip

One  day we decided to leave Aslam alone, whom I guess was relieved. We took  a road trip to see the poppy fields. We even called the "poppy line" to make sure where the poppys were. Altough they told us that there weren't any poppys we decided to go anyway.  Things didn't really work out as we planned but we had more fun because of it..Maud , hand on the wheel and the San Andreas fault on the back ground, drove the beautiful black mercedes. I was almost expecting an earth quake, being so close to the fault.... No poppys to be seen.(This is what it is supposed to be , if only it had rained) Sitting on the side of the road, in the middle of the San Andreas fault we decided to change our plans. It felt like a Hitchcock movie "North by Northwest"...  Cary grant is attacked by an airplane ( the airplane attack). So we turned around and decided to go to El Mirage Lakebed, Maud said it was fun and I was having fun driving through California  into an another world. First stop "Jerky beef" it's important to eat in the desert. I loved it!. . After an other hour we decided to stop for lunch at some deserted junction..., there is a piece of airplane stuck to this strange place in the middle of nowhere.... This is what we found inside: it looked like it had been some airport a long time ago , pieces of old airplanes were everywhere. The dried lakes around here can be used for take off and landings, Maud told me that the Challenger lands near by. This is the "El mirage Dry Lake"

........ This place was strange and wonderfull, The ilusion  of driving through water, when there was only wind and sand and a perfect temperature, was like beeing in a "mirage". Mirages and "sand devils" surrounded kids racing through the dried lake, and maybe because of the special light or the sound or the silent wind, the feeling was that we were alone. Like Thelma & Louise in a Mercedes S500 ( just a little bit classier)

Going back later in the day, nice and easy through the hills to Fullerton,..

on the side of th road : a poppy field!?

The Getty Museum

Visit of the Getty Center

"In !983 the Paul Getty Trust purchased about 750 acres in the foothills of Santa Monica Mountains. The following year, after an international search Richard Meier was chosen to design the Getty Center. Famous for his contributions to architectural Modernism, Meier wedded his signature style to more classical materials in order to express the Getty's roots in the past and belief in the future."

This opens the architectural brochure of the Getty Center.

Houston & L.A.

So I took this tiny little week vacation in the middle of a very big and busy year , and tried to make the most of it. I went to visit my long time friend Maud , whom I hadn´t seen for 10 years. We never lost contact I always received news, more through her sister Lilian , then herself.  I would send e-mails to her business adress but rarely got an answer. She had a very intense life , traveled to all the corners of the world , I think she just missed the North and the South Poles  and  finally ,after a divorce and a 2nd marriage ,we got together again. We met in Houston , the city she and her husband Aslam chose to live. She met me at the airport, alone, as Aslam was in LA where we would meet him in a couple days. Maud organized everyting , I think it still is a habit from the time she used to work , which was just a couple of months ago. She organizes to perfection: we had 2 days just the 2 of us to talk and talk and talk, 10 years took a lot of talking. Though  something much more intense than my visit  was occupying my friends mind:she and Aslam  had found the house of their dreams and were trying to find out if buying it would be a possibility.

To make a long story short, now I'm almost a real estate specialist, and I can tell you one thing : prices of real estate in the US are rocket high, the feeling is that there is a real estate bubble.

My first night in Houston I spent at Maud´s "small, old house" wich isn´t neither small nor old , but looking at the dream house , this is the best way I found to define it. Her beautifull little house, makes , this south american inhabitant, jealous. The finishing , and details in american houses are awsome. Maud´s kitchen is a place you wouldn´t want to leave , you can imagine the rest of the house.

The first picture is of my bedroom, the guestroom with a unique quilt made specially for her with the Texan star and the dutch Tulips.

This is the house in LA , and the swimming pool , in the Californian light looked  just like a painting of, David Hockney.( Moove the cursor and click on the links)

We flew over the Grand Canyon flying from Houston to LA through Denver....

Once in LA I was looking forward to meeting with Claire. Claire and I we were together at La Chassotte boarding school and we feel like sisters, this is the only good thing about boarding schools , the profound friendship.  I miss Claire always, and when something good or bad happens in my life , I call Claire. (There are links on the side of this page , about La Chassotte and pictures of the 2 of us in our teens).. We are standing in front of Claire´s house in North Hollywood on a nice street this house isn´t very big and is 50 years old, Claire has just received an offer os U$ 800.000,00 , She is waiting for the offer to go up to 1 million, wich is what her neighbours got! I think it´s fantastic and she deserves to make a good deal ,but that prices are unbelievably high, that they are.

.....

The Getty Center is special, just walking around the place , through the unexpected gardens, the California light on the wide spaces covered with travertine marble , is worth the voyage (Cela vaut le voyage). Maud and I started with lunch at the restaurant totally transparent and floating in the hills. During our lunch we decided what would be worth seeing. I learned from Maud , a long time ago that  one shouldn´t spend more than 2 hours in a museum, after 2 hours nothing wil make sense or be remembered. But a space so modern and so full of nuances was the center of my atention.......
